Vapor Intrusion
Vapor intrusion occurs when hazardous chemicals and volatile compounds move up through cracks, gaps, or pores in soil and foundations into homes and other buildings and even into the outdoor air. The vapors move upward out of the soil and the water table posing safety risks to home and business owners.
If you or your home or business may have been affected by vapor intrusion, contact attorney Christopher Dysart at (636) 812-0191.
Vapor intrusion has become a growing concern for residents within or close to possible contamination sites.
The negative impact of vapor intrusion may include:
- Serious health problems like cancer and Leukemia
- Severely reduced property values
- The risk of fires or explosions
How Vapor Intrusion Happens
Each case of vapor intrusion involves three elements:
- A source of contamination, typically the groundwater or soil contaminated by chemicals like benzene, gasoline or other toxins
- A building or residence
- A pathway from the source to indoor air inhaled by residents
Many toxins are odorless and thus difficult for residents to detect. The most common point of entry is through crack in basement walls or crawlspace and through sewer drains.
