Crystalline silica exposure can lead to silicosis or even lung cancer
These toxic tort conditions can leave families struggling financially
Recent study links crystalline silica exposure to certain lung cancers
The study findings could lead to more effective silicosis and cancer treatment
Silicosis is an incurable and sometimes deadly lung disease that is caused by long-term exposure to crystalline silica. A recent study showed that exposure to crystalline silica can also lead to a certain form of lung cancer. Both silicosis and lung cancer are serious and often fatal conditions that can drastically affect—and sometimes end—a victim’s life. This is one reason why Missouri and Illinois laws provide the opportunity for victims and surviving relatives to file toxic tort claims in a civil court. This can help families recover financially after being damaged through no fault of their own.
In the recent study, researchers used mice and looked at whether crystalline silica exposure affected the rate of tumor development in the animals. In those mice who spontaneously developed lung tumors, crystalline silica exposure demonstrably sped up the tumor growth. This also occurred in those mice that had human lung tumors implanted in their bodies. The scientists linked this factor to a molecule known as leukotriene B4 (LTB4), something that helps control inflammation in the body and most particularly in the lungs.
That molecule was shown to bind to a receptor known as BLT1. In cases where that receptor was removed from the mice, they enjoyed protection from having their tumors rapidly grow after silica exposure. These study findings could help advance the methods that are used to treat both silicosis and related types of lung cancer. This is exciting news for the 2 million American workers who are exposed to crystalline silica dust each year—and the estimated 10 million workers who could be exposed worldwide. While this is certainly a positive scientific development, it doesn’t help those people who have already suffered due to silicosis or lung cancer caused by silica exposure. These people and their families may benefit from the filing of a toxic tort case to seek financial restitution.
